Liposuction Q & A

What is tumescent liposuction?

Tumescent liposuction involves injecting a local anesthetic and other medication into the areas of fat to be removed.

The solution causes the fatty layer just under the skin to swell and get firm. Dr. Smith then inserts a cannula, or small tube, into the area and “vacuums” the unwanted fat away.

What are the benefits of tumescent liposuction?

In addition to giving Dr. Smith extra control in contouring your body, tumescent liposuction gives you a faster recovery. Other benefits include:

  • No need for general anesthesia
  • You’re awake and can move to achieve the best results
  • Less chance of cannulas damaging internal organs

When the solution is injected, it causes blood vessels to temporarily shrink, which reduces blood loss during the procedure and limits bruising, pain, and swelling afterward.

What is Vaser liposuction?

Vaser liposuction is the form of tumescent liposuction used by Dr. Smith at her practice. The process uses sound waves to gently loosen fat to smoothly contour your body.

After the tumescent liquid is injected, Dr. Smith uses ultrasound high-frequency vibration to break fat cells apart. The vibration ultimately emulsifies the fat and tumescent fluid, so it’s easier to remove with the cannula.

What areas can be treated with tumescent liposuction?

Tumescent liposuction removes fat from just about anywhere on your body, including your:

  • Neck, chin, and face
  • Breasts and back
  • Stomach and buttocks
  • Hips, thighs, and flanks
  • Knees, calves, and ankles

Talk to Dr. Smith about the areas on your body that are stubborn to fat loss. She can help you understand what results tumescent liposuction will provide.

What is recovery like following tumescent liposuction?

The local anesthetic injected during the procedure reduces pain for about 24 hours after surgery. This means you have less post-operative pain than you might with other liposuction methods.

Dr. Smith encourages you to walk immediately after the procedure to improve your healing. Exercise is possible three to seven days post liposuction, and as long as your job isn’t highly physical, you can return to work in just a few days.

Expect the post-operative swelling to reduce in a few days. You will see benefits within just a week or two, but optimal results appear after several months.
